POLICE believe a couple of bumbling thieves filmed stealing an excavator in Carrum Downs in May could be linked to a series of thefts across the south-eastern suburbs.
In what looks like a scene from a silent slapstick comedy, the thieves make several hapless attempts to load the excavator onto a truck.
It falls off the truck twice before they give up and drag it out of the yard behind the truck, leaving wreckage scattered behind them.
Detectives of the Frankston crime investigation unit have released the security footage in the hope that the public may help to identify the two men.
The excavator, a Clarke 873 model valued at $28,000, has not been recovered since the theft about 1.50am on May 15.
A police spokesman said the theft was one of a series of similar thefts in the south-eastern and eastern suburbs in May and June in which trucks, excavators and earth-moving equipment valued at about $1million was stolen.
Anyone with information about the thefts or the men in the security footage can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppers南京夜网.au.
