Terrific teachers
Nanjing Night Net

Teachers are the unsung heroes of every community. They work tirelessly in and out of the classroom to ensure that children receive all the benefits education can bring.

But it’s not that often teachers receive the recognition and reward they deserve in the wider community.

In 2011, 2UE launched a search for Sydney’s Favourite Teacher. It’s now time to find out who that person is for 2012.

The winning teacher receives $10,000 cash; the winner’s school gets $4000; and the nominators are up for $1000 as well.

Mosaic teamwork

Two large-scale mosaics produced by girls from years 8, 9 and 10 were recently unveiled: one at Colyton Neighbourhood Centre, the other at Colyton High School Trade School.

Under the Magnetic Places Program run by Penrith Council, artist Diamando Koutsellis worked with students to produce a series of mosaics using tiles made by hand from raw clay.

They designed, cut out, pressed, fired and glazed the tiles by themselves.

Ms Koutsellis worked at Colyton High in 2011 as part of the Artists in Schools program.

During that project large totem poles, or Story Stacks, were created by ceramic students in years 9 and 10 under her guidance.

Students working on this latest project learned design skills, ceramic techniques and problem solving strategies and about teamwork.

The mosaic creations at the two venues now can be admired by the whole community.
