PENRITH Council is one of the few local-government areas to conduct this Saturday’s election independently of the NSW Electoral Commission.

The council estimates it has saved ratepayers more than $100,000 by contracting out the poll’s administration to a private firm, the Australian Election Company.

Last year the state government amended the Local Government Act to return the responsibility for administering elections to councils.

Penrith Council later decided to tender for a contractor to run the election.

Although the Australian Election Company’s tender was the only one received, council officers recommended it be accepted.

“The staff who will be employed by the company as returning officers have demonstrated their knowledge, skills and experience in the conduct of elections,” their report stated.

After all the votes are collected on election night they will be transported to Newcastle where they will be scanned and counted.

“Results will be announced as soon as possible,” a Penrith Council spokesman said.
