Driven to succeed: Blair Munford and Nathan Scarfone are using personal experiences to motivate them in the Ride To Conquer Cancer.Pictures: Jeff de Pasquale For his sister: Joel Grimston’s sister will be in his heart and mind when he raises money to conquer cancer.
THREE men with three different inspirations will cycle more than 200 kilometres in two days to raise money for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Camden’s Blair Munford and Nathan Scarfone and Joel Grimston, of Warragamba, have all been touched by cancer and want to raise money to conquer the disease by riding in the Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer in October.
Mr Grimston is dedicating his ride to his sister Sasha who fought an eight-month battle with ovarian cancer but died three days before her 32nd birthday.
Mr Grimston will mark his sister’s 33rd birthday on the first day of the ride, October 13.
Mr Munford works as an anaesthetist and continually sees and cares for cancer patients.
Mr Scarfone, 20, supported his girlfriend when her mother was being treated for breast cancer.
The three have to raise $2500 before the ride.
Mr Munford said he’s seen the effects of cancer both at work and in his personal life.
Four friends have lost their battles with cancer in the past two years.
“I know that all of these people would want us to support cancer research and treatment so others don’t have to go through what they had to endure,’’ he said.
Mr Scarfone said he wants to start helping charity and thought this would be a good place to start.
‘‘I bought a bike just for this ride,’’ the former Camden High School student said.
‘‘The training has been good and I’ve raised $410 so far. I hope the community can help me out.’’
Mr Munford said his father had an eight-year battle with cancer and was given the all-clear two months ago.
‘‘I just want to encourage everyone to help out with this worthy cause.
‘‘Money raised could one day go to your friend’s, wife’s or husband’s care from Lifehouse.’’
The ride begins with a ceremony on Saturday, October 13, after which the riders will cover a 100-kilometre route to Kirkham Park, Camden, where they will camp.
They will return to Sydney the next day.
