PICTON Rangers soccer team were relegated from the Illawarra Premier League despite beating Wollongong Olympic 1-0 at Hume Oval, Picton on Saturday.
A second-half Dayne Morley strike secured victory over a nine-man Wollongong team that regularly appeared to foul Picton.
Tempers boiled over in the 75th minute when Matt Tesoriero was fouled by the goalkeeper.
The goalkeeper was sent off and Tesoriero played no further part because of a facial injury.
Picton coach Richard Harrison praised his team’s resolve against physical opposition.
“Right from the start we were the better side, we just played our normal game and deservedly won today,” Harrison said.
“I think we restricted them really well and showed some great character.”
Harrison criticised Wollongong’s approach to the game.
“They were absolutely disgusting out there today. Not only were they dirty on the field but they’ve got 20 or so guys on the sideline constantly yelling.
“The challenge on Matt Tesoriero was a disgrace, we’ll be lucky to have him back next week, it seemed a bad one.”
Joy turned to despair after the game as news filtered through of a Fernhill victory.
Picton finish the season away to Albion Park White Eagles on Saturday.
