NOW that he has been given the “all clear” from testicular cancer, Hurstville mayor Steve McMahon has turned his mind to fund-raising for the St George Cancer Care Centre.
Cr McMahon is inviting the community to the Balls and Boobs Barbecue on Thursday, September 13.
As disclosed a few months ago, Cr McMahon was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and in an effort to raise awareness of this disease, he requested that the council hold this event.
“I am relieved and delighted to say the doctor has now given me the all clear,” he said.
“I only went to the doctor after much nagging from my wife, which probably saved my life.”
He said that of the 680 Australian men diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2010, 30 died, meaning that about 95 per cent survived and went on to live full and active lives.
The barbecue will also contain information about breast cancer.
The council will collect gold coin donations at the barbecue.
The barbecue is from 7am to 4pm at the grassy area by Hurstville train station on Forest Road.
