VEOLIA Transport NSW has confirmed a revised bus route, starting September 3.
Two extra zones will service Durham Street, Carlton, to support the new route 455 between Hurstville and Rockdale railway station.
Veolia general operations manager Len Kidd said it was 13 years since the 455 route was revised.
“In that time, a lot has changed in St George, including increases in traffic, trends in travel demand and the introduction of three new bus routes,” he said.
He said a recent review found the route was almost twice the distance of a direct road journey.
“The majority of passengers place a high value on fast travel times,” Mr Kidd said.
“Recent changes to traditional bus networks involving the introduction of more direct bus routes have resulted in a significant increase in patronage.”
He said the new route was designed to meet the needs of the majority of passengers travelling to and from the most popular destinations including Hurstville, Kingsgrove and Kogarah. He said this would minimise walking distances.
Bus running times were also adjusted and there would be extra trips on weekdays and weekends.
Mr Kidd said a bus would continue to run to and from St George Hospital but residents who did not live close to the route could transfer at Hurstville Bus Interchange.
A plan to discontinue service to Rockdale Plaza was modified following a public outcry.
