DESPITE being Engadine-born and bred I’d never really been a fan of Engadine RSL’s restaurant. Until, that is, I lunched there recently with Misses 4 and 6, my mum, brother, his wife and three of their four boys. Yes, we travel in a pack.
Brasserie 2233 serves modern and classic takes on a variety of European and Australian dishes and say they are the only a la carte restaurant in Engadine. I had the tuna nicoise (seared tuna steak served with potato cake, confit tomato, green olives fritters and capsicum coulis) and was pleasantly surprised by the very modern take on a traditional French dish. Instead of a salad the dish was served warm and the highlight of the meal was the moreish green olives fritters.
The kids’ menu really impressed all the little people — pizza, pastas, chicken strips, or fish and chips for just $8.50. Crucially, the price also included ice-cream with topping, vital for keeping kids happy in a restaurant.
The children’s menu was printed on a colouring-in sheet and crayons were immediately brought to the table by our cheerful and calm waiter. Big ticks for keeping little hands busy.
I managed to snaffle a bite of my nephew’s cheese pizza, which was beautifully presented on a wooden serving board. It was delicious, very cheesy, with a dry, crispy base.
