TWO organisations are in a race to find suitable land in the Blacktown and Hills district to set up a Muslim cemetery in response to the shortage of such burial grounds.
They are NSW Islamic Council which looks after Riverstone Muslim Cemetery, the only ground for those living in the inner and north-west of Sydney. The other is the newly established Australian Muslim Janaza & Community Services Inc (AMJCS) at Mt Druitt which recently presented a petition for burial ground to mayor Alan Pendleton.
Cr Pendleton said the council was preparing a master plan and that it would be considered by the new council after the local government election in about two weeks’ time.
A spokesman for NSW Islamic Council Anjum Rafiqi said there were only about 400 burial spaces left in Riverstone.
He said the government was recently obliged to extend the burial ground for Muslims at Rookwood cemetery in Lidcombe to meet the demand.
“We are looking for new sites at Box Hill and Hawkesbury,” he said. “As soon as we have found a suitable site of 10 hectares we will contact the government and councils for approval.”
Council member Abdul Haq said his community would comply with Islamic teaching for the deceased to be buried facing Mecca in Saudi Arabia in any new cemetery.
He said his organisation charged $3000 for a burial plot in Riverstone because it had to pay $1350 alone for a government burial permit.
AMJCS volunteer Osman Iqbal said the burial cost could drop from about $3000 to $500 if had its own cemetery in the region.
“Our volunteers now provide funeral services at our Mt Druitt facility for a minimal cost to Muslim families,” he said.
“The problem is urgent as we are required to bury our deceased within 24 hours.”
