Storm sesaon preparation essential, say Hills SES

May 6, 2018 by admin

Is your home prepared for the storm season?

That’s the question being asked by Hills State Emergency Service controller Evelyn Lester after strong gusting winds swept through the region in the past fortnight, tearing off the roof of a primary school, among other damage.

‘‘For the residents, a gentle reminder: we are in storm season,’’ Ms Lester said.

‘‘Check for low-lying branches over your houses and have them cut back, have your gutters cleaned and avoid having loose items around when there is wind.’’

Importantly, do not not park under trees in a storm, she said.

‘‘We’ve had teams out the last two weeks,’’ Ms Lester with reference to the Baulkham Hills SES who sent three crews of volunteers to contain the damage, which spread across the Shire from North Rocks to Wisemans Ferry.

She said from Thursday to Saturday a group of 20 volunteers responded to 10 jobs after trees fell on houses, cars, carports and across driveways, while others damaged by the wind hovered dangerously over properties.

The Hills unit also attended St Angela’s Primary School at Castle Hill, when winds blew off several metal sheets from the roof on two classrooms on August 17.

The school was shut down and students confined to classrooms for 45 minutes while the SES made the area safe.

For emergency assistance with storm damage call the SES on 132 500.
