The season is over for the Forbes Platypi colts after suffering a 15-3 loss to Orange City in last Sunday’s Blowes Clothing Cup elimination semi-final.
Jeff Stewart’s under 19s team were the Forbes club’s last hope in the Central West Rugby semi-finals, but having finished the home-and-away rounds in third position, were knocked out after finals losses to CSU Bathurst and Orange City Lions in consecutive weeks.
Forbes could not penetrate Orange City’s defence at Narromine last Sunday and their only score was a penalty goal in the first half by Blake Neilsen.
Jeff Stewart said the Platypi were still in the game until the final moments but made costly errors at crucial stages.
“Nothing seemed to work for us,” Stewart said.
“I think it was just one of those days.
“We had our opportunities to win the game but we just didn’t capitalise on them.
“We just made too many fundamental errors.”
The Platypi opened the scoring on Sunday, kicking a penalty goal to lead 3-0.
Despite more penalty conversion attempts by both teams, Forbes took their lead to half-time, but surrendered the advantage soon after the re-start with Orange scoring the game’s first five-pointer through forward pressure.
Orange maintained their slender lead throughout the second half but it wasn’t until the Lions scored a runaway try that the game slipped out of Forbes’ grasp.
“We were still in it and we definitely had opportunities to win the game – it was just errors or the bounce of the ball that didn’t go our way,” Stewart said.
Stewart said Adrian Cole, Jordan Coles and Jake Cutler were three stand-out players for the Platypi last Sunday.
In review, the colts coach said it had been a good year for the Platypi under 19s, who had performed above expectation.
“It was definitely a successful year,” he said. “I don’t think too many people thought that Forbes would make the finals and go so far.”
Stewart, who only managed two games for the Platypi seniors this year after a knee reconstruction, said he was undecided about his coaching future.
However he said he had enjoyed his role this year.
“I’m not too sure what I’m doing next year – I’ll just see what happens, but it’s been a fun year.”
On behalf of his team, Stewart thanked everyone who made the trip to Narromine to support the colts last Sunday and also thanked first grade coach Phil Prior for his assistance training the under 19s in preparation for the finals.
ORANGE CITY 15 (J Alexander, T Johnson tries; Alexander 1 conversion, 1 penalty goal) def FORBES PLATYPI 3 (Blake Neilsen 1 penalty goal).
