Magpies knocked out of finals

May 3, 2018 by admin

Wellington’s talented reserve grade side is all that stands between all three Group 11 rugby league premierships being won by Dubbo sides after booking their spot in the grand final with an extra-time 42-24 win over Forbes on Sunday.

Both sides had their chances to win an entertaining contest, which went into extra time after youngster Lewis Stanley calmly slotted a penalty goal in the final minute to lock the scores at 24-all.

The previous 59 minutes had been a showcase of free-flowing and tough football, the hallmark of most reserve grade competitions.

Wellington jumped to an early 16-0 lead courtesy of tries to captain-coach Darren Toomey and a pair to Stanley.

Forbes struck back through a converted try to their leader Ben Gunn to leave the scoreboard reading 16-6 to the Cowboys at half-time.

Jake Goodwin in action for the Magpies last weekend.

As they have done all season Forbes battled back, making the most of the extra space on the field while both sides had a man in the sin-bin as the result of a fight in the early minutes of the second stanza.

Crafty halfback Matt Morris scored and converted before winger Brodie Phillips put the Magpies in front after an enterprising kick and chase.

A Jake Goodwin try with 10 minutes to go looked like being enough as it extended the lead to eight points but a try to Trent Forrest got the Cowboys back to within two.

With Wellington on the charge and looking likely to snatch the try needed for victory, Forbes conceded a penalty and Stanley sent it into extra-time at 24-all.

Michael Peachey crossed twice in the first period of extra time to give Wellington a 12-point buffer before Norm West dashed 40 metres to score in the second stanza to leave the final score 42-24 in favour of the Cowboys.

The win will put Wellington into a grand final match up against Dubbo Macquarie.

Wellington Cowboys 42 (Lewis Stanley 2, Michael Peachey 2, Norm West, Trent Forrest, Darren Toomey tries; Stanley 7 goals) def Forbes Magpies 24 (Ben Gunn, Matt Morris, Jake Goodwin, Brodie Phillips tries; Morris 4 goals).
