War waged on weeds
A new $800,000 project is set to wage war on aquatic weeds choking the Hawkesbury-Nepean river system, NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson has said.
The project will tackle salvinia, water hyacinth, alligator weed, Senegal tea plant and egeria.
Left uncontrolled, these weeds strangle river systems, deplete the water of oxygen, impede river flows and water quality and damage the aquatic ecosystem.
The project will:
¦ target mechanical harvesting;
¦ use barrier booms to stop the spread of weeds downstream; and
¦ decrease nutrient runoff that feeds the weeds.
The project will be funded and NSW DPI and the Hawkesbury River County Council.
