Scoring record tumbles

May 2, 2018 by admin

THE Panthers Toyota Cup side slaughtered the Gold Coast Titans 78-0 last Sunday to claim the record for the largest margin in a Toyota Cup game. While coach Garth Brennan says it’s nice to see the young cubs reap benefits from their hard work, he believes they’ve still got further to go.

You must have been one very proud coach on full-time?

Yeah I was. We finally got an 80 minute performance together, which I’ve been asking for all year.

Was it all part of the game plan to run riot like that?

Won 78-0

No. The pleasing thing for me was the zero we kept the Titans to . . . 78 is fantastic but zero is even better.

The competition ladder suggests you’re the best defensive side in the competition. How important is that to you?

That’s massive. If you’re the best defensive side in the comp, years gone by show and prove that you’re thereabouts at the end of the year. It’s a real achievement for the team.

Are you thinking about the finals yet or just concentrating on round 26?

We’ve got one game left and we’ve got a lot to lose with this game. We’re in fourth and if we win, we stay in fourth spot, and that’s where you want to be with this new finals series. If we lose, we go down to fifth or sixth, and then it’s knockouts and do or die from then on. Our destiny is in our own hands and that’s how I want it.

Which players gave stand-out individual performances?

Zac Mackay got 38 points which is an NYC record for the amount of points scored in one game. George Jennings and Daniel Foster were on his inside and really dished up a lot of that stuff to him on a silver plate. Although Zac gets the reward, Jennings and Foster were outstanding and really contributed to the points Zac scored.

What did you think of their strong displays?

I was really happy for [halves] Daniel and Toby Evans because they did a fantastic job with the kicking game. It’s something I’ve been critical of over our recent losses — no one has been a bigger critic then me — but credit where credit is due, they did a really good job. George is in outstanding form at the moment. There’s a lot of similarities between him and his brother. George still has a long way to go as far as learning, but you can tell he’s a Jennings. Consistency is something Zac needs to work on. Last time we played the Titans, he equalled Blake Austin’s club record for the most points scored in a game, so I think he just likes playing the Titans.

The side battle the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night. How tough are you expecting the game to be?

I’m expecting the hardest clash of the year but I’ve got the utmost faith we can do it.
