It’s rare that you see a league fan cry but that may well happen this weekend when the Parramatta Eels farewell two of their most loyal sons.
Captain courageous Nathan Hindmarsh and goalkicker Luke Burt will play their final game for the blue and gold on Sunday against St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium.
Watch a video of Hindmarsh and Burt announcing the players for this weekend’s game:
The game will be a sombre affair with the pair robbed of their chance to play their last game at Parramatta Stadium and the team now confirmed as wooden spooners.
The faithful will be out in full force to send their much – loved veterans out in style. The pair have 592 games between them.
Leading the tributes was former Eels great Ray Price.
Price said both players would have fit into the great Eels premiership sides of the 1980s.
‘‘You wouldn’t hear anyone saying a bad word against either of them,’’ Price said.
‘‘I’m very proud to have seen them play, even though I didn’t play with either of them.’’
Teammates have spent the week knowing they’ll have to say goodbye to their ‘‘old boy’’ mates who have been at the club since 1999.
Willie Tonga said he’ll never forget his debut 10 years ago in a game which featured both players.
On match day a police helicopter will thrill spectators by delivering special edition ‘Farewell Nathan Hindmarsh’ jerseys which the team will wear in the landmark match. The side wore ‘Farewell Luke Burt’ jerseys in last week’s match against South Sydney.
The club has also organised for Parramatta past greats Ray Price, Brett Kenny, Michael Vella, Adam Peek and Brad Drew to attend to celebrate 150 years of NSW Policing.
Club bosses have organised a guard of honour of with junior players from Hindmarsh’s first club, the Robertson Spuddies, and Burt’s childhood team, the Dudley Magpies.
Eels fans who can’t make the game get a chance to farewell their heroes on Saturday when the team hold an open training session at Parramatta Stadium from 9am.
