‘‘YOU couldn’t even hear when [Education Minister] Peter Garrett named the winner. All you could hear was ‘Nor…’.’’
That’s how Warren Flanagan described the atmosphere at Sydney Entertainment Centre when Northmead Creative Arts and Performing Arts High School was named the premier division winner of the 2012 Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.
‘‘It was like we picked the correct theme for the year,” Mr Flanagan, the show’s creative director, said.
“The judges’ comments was they liked how we made a twist on West Side Story and made it our own.”
More than that, the eight-minute production pushed a social message: Don’t text while driving.
“You can wait to read your message,” said Josh O’Grady who played Jett in the show.
The fine for a learner or P1 driver caught using a mobile phone while driving – even if it’s hands-free – is $298.
The penalty also applies to other drivers caught using a hand-held mobile.
You will also lose three demerit points and four if the offence occurs in a school zone.
